# Privacy Policy — MacroJournal

**Effective date:** September 1, 2026
**Developer:** Noah Williams
**Contact:** [email protected]

MacroJournal ("the app") is a personal food journal and nutrition tracker. This policy explains what data the app handles and where it goes. The short version: **your data lives on your device, and the developer never receives it.**

## What the app stores, and where

Everything you enter — your name, goals, meals, food logs, body weight, and waist measurements — is stored **only on your device**. The app has **no account system, no developer-operated server, and no analytics or tracking**. The developer cannot see your data, and it is never uploaded to us, shared, or sold.

If you delete the app, that data is deleted with it.

## Apple Health (optional)

If you turn on "Sync activity from Apple Health," the app reads two things from Apple Health, **read-only**: your **workouts** (type and duration) and your **active energy burned**. This is used to show your activity in the app and to inform your optional AI analysis.

- Health data is **never used for advertising or marketing**, and is **never sold or shared** with third parties for those purposes.
- Health data stays on your device except as described under "AI features" below.
- You can revoke this access at any time in the Apple Health app (Sharing → Apps).

## AI features (optional, and only with your own key)

The app's AI features (estimating meals from text or photos, and daily/weekly analysis) work **only if you add your own Anthropic API key** in Settings. If you do:

- When you choose to analyze a meal or generate an analysis, the relevant information — your **meal description or photo**, your **macro totals and goals**, and (if you enabled Apple Health) a short **summary of that day's workout/active energy** — is sent directly from your device to **Anthropic** to generate the result.
- This happens only when you actively request it, using **your own** Anthropic account. The developer never receives this data.
- Anthropic's handling of that data is governed by Anthropic's own privacy policy.

If you do not add an API key, no data is ever sent to Anthropic.

## Other third-party lookups

To help you log food, the app sends limited requests to:

- **USDA FoodData Central** — the food name you search for, to look up nutrition facts.
- **Open Food Facts** — the barcode you scan, to look up a product.

These requests contain only your search term or scanned barcode — never your personal data, goals, or health information.

Restaurant and branded food data powered by fatsecret nutrition API (www.fatsecret.com). Generic food data from USDA FoodData Central.

## Children

The app is not directed to children under 13 and does not knowingly collect information from them.

## Changes

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this same location with a new effective date.
